About
Serial entrepreneur and strategic business architect who specializes in scaling disruptive technologies into global industries. With over two decades of leadership experience across for-profit and non-profit sectors, his career serves as a blueprint for institutional growth. As a founder of Blackboard Inc., a venture launched during his time at Cornell University, Stephen helped engineer an organization that evolved from a dorm-room concept into a multi-billion-dollar enterprise serving over 100 million learners. Today, he continues this legacy as Chairman of the Gilfus Education Group and General Partner of Oversight Ventures. Stephen utilizes his proprietary Gilfus Maturity Model to synchronize technical and operational growth, helping startups transition from early-stage pilots to scalable enterprise systems. Additionally, his proprietary "Purge, Park, Pursue, Partner" innovation framework allows him to collaborate with both emerging startups and established enterprises. A Rochester, New York native, Stephen combines regional roots with world-class operational excellence. His influence extends to global governance as a Director, Trustee, and Innovation and Technology Committee Chair for ISACA. As an expert in "growth company problem sets" and complex capital structures, Stephen provides strategic foresight to de-risk investments and accelerate market entry. Currently, he is championing the "Upstate New York Silicon Valley" tech corridor along the I-90.
